“Come lets drink coffee” Nu buna tetue
History tells as that, Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia in the Keffa region of the present southern nations and nationalities. I once read a story at one of the popular cafés in Addis, a goat herder by the name kaldi discovers that his goats were acting strange after eating a certain type of plant, that plan apparently was found to be coffee. As it is known coffee is a very popular drink in the whole wide world. From my point of view coffee is part of the Ethiopian identity; it manifests our culture in unprecedented magnitude. The societal role of coffee is give paramount importance.i strongly belief it is a distinguishing factor of the Ethiopian society .whether we go north ,south ,east, west we found the coffee ceremony. It is a unifying factor; it is one of the many commonalties we have as a heterogeneous society .I guess it can also be a gigantic manifestation of our African heritage. We Africans live in a highly communal stricture. The coffee ceremony in Ethiopia has levels of preparation. Every stage has its own meaning for me .I can differentiate the stages based on the aroma……..it has different smell when it is roasted, smashed and boiled. The coffee ceremony brings everyone closer. People chat with each other, we laugh and it is generally fun. I enjoy the ceremony and it cheers me up. I suppose, it is part of who I am and It is what brings me closer to those people I love and respect .Family and friends gather together for this special occasion. It is a good pass time for me; it makes me fell like I am complete and not alone,i get to talk to elders and share their wisdom. It is a good arena for disseminating information. However, some people associate the coffee ceremony with “evil” spirits and rituals but for me it is a grate opportunity to learn about my heritage .culture and identity. Most importantly it is my African pride and tradition. Now I invite all of you to come and drink my coffee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
