A victory over victory

The Axumite kingdom was established between 200 and 100 BC and was once one of the four kingdoms of the world. . The Aksumites lived in the Ethiopian highlands near the Red Sea, and so enjoyed a strategic position in the trade routes between Yemen (in the south of the Arabian peninsula) and the cities of Nubia. Axum is a home to the world’s tallest obelisks. One of a group of seven obelisks erected at Axum when Ethiopia adopted Christianity under the Emperor Ezana in the mid-fourth century A.D., the 24 meter tall monument was taken by the occupying Italian army and shipped to Rome in 1937 to celebrate Mussolini's fifteenth year of power. The Ethiopian government, with its supporters, has been trying to get the obelisk back. And this process takes more than 70 years. But finally, we got our 1700 years old obelisk back home. It has 24 meters height and 160 tones of weight which makes it difficult for transporting. That is why it is made to be shipped in 3 rounds. When the last piece of the obelisk was landed at Axum, there was a crowd of peoples waiting with tears in their eyes. Well come home.It is a victory over victory, because it is not far that our athletes made the name of Ethiopia above all on the stage of Olympic, Beijing.Long live Ethiopia!
