Nowhere to play

Nowadays it is not extraordinary to see children playing football in the middle of car roads. You may even get a chance of watching the players kicking the ball under or over the passing car to score a goal. For your surprising, this is Addis Ababa where a car accident is a very serious problem.

WHAT forced them to play in such a dangerous field than in a safe playing ground? Eyob, 15, said he wish he would play in a safe place. But there is no place like that. He added: “ I know it is dangerous to play here. We protect ourselves by running to the corner before the coming car reach us. Some drivers are cautious and some are not.

His friend Alemu, 17, said, “ in our village houses were built in the entire playing grounds. And now there is no free space. There is nowhere to play. We don’t have a choice.”

32-years- old villager, Berihanu, agree with them: “ when I was a child we had many free spaces where we can freely play, but now it is a different thing. I can’t blame these children for playing on car roads. I think it is better to say ‘you should play here’ than ‘don’t play here’. He also suggests that the local officials along with the community should think over this problem.
