Gardner or a college boy

The gardener is on time for his work. It is 8:am local time. Like every day he started his regular duty by watering the plants. Had it not been a summer break he would be in a classroom or in a library. Negusu, 21, was born and raised in the capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. After completing the high school education, he needs to go to bahir dar about 560km far from Addis for his college study. Now he is learning in the university of bahir dar, faculty of law.

When he finished his first year courses. He came back to his family because it is a summer break. But he did not get the vacation as he thought. He said he is so tired of being idle. “ I tried to make myself busy by reading some books and helping my younger brother studying mathematics. But my heart keep on telling me I need to work more. So I can’t feel good. Plus I have to make money.” he said.

In some other regions of the country college students are invited to teach high school students in the summer break time. But Negusu did not get the chance to. This does not stop him from searching another occupation. “I think I tried my best to find a good job that is compatible to my education but I didn’t find one. And I don’t want to sit idle waiting for a good work. So I just go to the jobs that are available, and it’s gardening in a hotel. I accept it without hesitation. And now I am feeling good.” He added.

When I found him in his work he was carrying his work material. I did not forget his smiling face. In his community it is not ordinary to see a college boy working in a garden.  “I appreciate his love for his work. I worked, as a gardener for the last 11 years but I have never experienced a university student to be my work met.” Said Tesfaye 35-years-old gardener.
