Year of African Youth

The Youth Media and Communication Initiative (YMCI), an umbrella organisation of Nigerian children and youth has petitioned President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of Nigeria on the need for Nigeria to ratify the African Youth Charter (AYC).

Mind you diet guys. Many people doest choose what to eat when and at what time. I formally used to eat everything which came in front of me.

I don’t know what African governments waiting for?!

There is an ongoing discussion in Tanzania after secondary school students are protesting against the increase of bus fare for their school for more fifty percent.

Different experiences, both good and bad, had been accumulated in the last four years since the conception of the Pan African Youth Union.

For the majority of young people in developing countries the innocence and freedoms of childhood end early as the harsh realities of survival, gaining an education, and preparing for the responsibilities of adulthood take over.

Ethiopia is rich in water resource, the second largest in Africa after the D.R.C. The unfortunate truth though is the lack of adequate potable water for Ethiopia’s eighty million plus population. Statistics tell us that only 41% of households nationwide have access to potable water and from this meager number 30-60% are non functional. So in reality less than a 20% of our population has access to drinking water.

For years politicians, community leaders and corporates have talked about vesting more power in the hands of youths. We are told the youth are the leaders of tomorrow and should be given a wider platform to contribute to society.

Alice Walker wrote that resistance is the secret to possessing joy.She did not write that it was the path to an easy life, just that it was the way to the freedom experienced in a life that is authentic, a life lived in questioning.
