60th Anniversary Celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is the first international human rights instrument which captures the full range of human rights, attaching equal importance to freedoms from fear as well as freedoms from want.

The UDHR, which was adopted in December 10, 1948, is the most translated document in the world. It has served as an inspiration to the adoption of a number of international, regional and national human rights instruments.

A year long commemoration was launched by the UN Secretary General at the occasion of the Human Rights day (10 December, 2007) to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the UDHR. This year long event is being celebrated under the theme "Dignity and Justice for all of us" and is being marked by different public awareness campaigns under the lead of the United Nations Human Rights office.

This year's celebration provides an opportunity for young Africans to uphold and revitalize the promises held in the UDHR in order to properly address the growing inequities in different social, political and economic situations across the continent.

The protection of human rights is critical for the construction of a peaceful, democratic and developed continent where young people can realize their capacities and aspirations.
